Heading South from Yellowstone, Part 1
Leaving Idaho Falls we headed southwest on Highway 20 towards the I-15 and the “outskirts” of Pocatello where we turned our rig westward on I-80 toward the junction of I-84. We were soon traveling the interstate with the Snake River paralleling the roadway. The beautifully designed rest stop, just west of the junction of Hwy 37, on I-86, offers great views of the River.
At the junction of Highway 93 we turned southward towards Twin Falls, Idaho and the Perrine Bridge. This magnificent bridge is 1500’ long and almost 500’ high as it spans the Snake River basin. In addition to the river, there are golf courses, hiking trails and waterfalls in the canyon spanned by this beauty. East of the bridge, on the south rim of the canyon, can be seen the dirt ramp which Evil Knievel used in his unsuccessful attempt to jump the canyon in 1974.
One of the unusual features of the bridge is that this is one of the few places in the country, which allows unrestricted “base jumping” during most daylight hours. After parking our rig in the large visitor center parking area, at the south end of the bridge, we watched people jump off of the bridge, parachuting onto the riverbank below!
After a walk to the informative visitor center and a bite of lunch we turned south on Highway 93 towards some Nevada adventures. (A note: While not shown on all maps; In Twin Falls, just south of the Perrine Bridge Visitor Center, Highway 93, makes a SHARP RIGHT TURN onto ADDISON AVENUE. We missed the turn and had a heck of a time reconnecting with Highway 93.)
